VFX Work.
I co-founded Giant Killer Robots, along with my partners Mike Schmitt, John Vegher, and Amber Wong, in 1997, and as we grew, my partners and I co-managed and supervised the artists and staff on the various projects there. GKR was a visual effects production studio that had grown over eleven productive years from several artists into a facility of 90+ artists and production staff. I was alternately a manager and the lead creative for the studio, and participated in every aspect of the productions we worked on; from bidding, testing, conceptual development, on set supervision, technical direction, compositing, animation, pitching creative concepts and acting as the creative liaison with our clients. I served as the primary lead for many of the largest shows that we completed.
Over the years, Giant Killer Robots was honored with two Academy Awards, one for Visual Effects, and one for Animation, along with other accolades - including an additional Academy Award Nomination for VFX, and an Emmy Award in VFX for television and additional awards and honors. Prior to my days at Giant Killer Robots, I was a founding partner at Pixel Liberation Front, along with other co-founders. When PLF was established in 1995, the process of using CGI to technically plan and frame shots -now commonly referred to as "previsualization" or "previz" for short- was a completely untested process in the film industry. Thanks to PLF and the work we started there, there are now many companies specializing in previz, and all of the major VFX and animation facilities have specialized previz departments. Since that time in 1995, PLF has gone on to previsualize many major features and projects.
My experience also spans several years more recently at the helm of the U.S. offices of India's Reliance MediaWorks VFX unit. Reliance is heavily involved in the film production business, and has more recently pushed into post-production services, expanding their presence most recently with a partial buyout of Digital Domain, one of the pre-eminent VFX facilities in the U.S.-- a buyout that was the result of an introduction between the companies that I initiated during my time at Reliance MediaWorks..
